I figured it would be one of those desperate clubs. Academy checks the box, but I am surprised about Volley Viet.

We saw it in Academy's registration form as well. As PP stated, we thought it was against the recruiting rules and made the decision not try out for them.

This is from the CHRVA “Junior’s Recruiting FAQs:

Q. I am feeling pressure to let a coach know whether I will play for them next year. What should I do?
A. Remember, a coach is not allowed to seek the intent of a player prior to making an offer and is not allowed to seek a commitment prior to the Open Tryout Period. The purpose of the CHRVA recruiting policy is to allow players to evaluate their options prior to making a commitment.

Seems like a violation of the recruiting rules. My DD has been indirectly asked these kinds of questions over the years, but I’ve never heard of a club putting it in writing so directly. Extremely unethical.

Were looking at actually had questions on their registration form asking whether that club was your first choice and what the likelihood is that you would choose that club if you were given an offer. DD wound up not trying out for that one, but those questions did catch my eye. They seemed a bit nosy and it made me wonder whether we’d be held to those answers (probably not?) and it made me wonder whether DD would get more attention at the tryout or less. Did anyone see this same registration form, and what did you think?

VolleyViet had this question on their tryout registration form. There were 3 possible answers, and they went something like this...
"If you received an offer from VV, would you accept?
-Yes. VV is the only team I am trying out for.
-Yes, I am trying out for other teams but would accept an offer from VV.
-Maybe. I'd have to consider other offers."

My DD is convinced this is why she didn’t get chosen as an alternate for them. After watching their tryouts, I think she’s right. She was honest in her answer.

What was the club that asked this question? We tried out for three clubs and none of them asked about your approach to a potential offer.

Its completely inappropriate to ask if a club is your first choice on a registration form. There is no good answer to that question.

If you say no you are telling the club you will take someone else's offer when you get it. The club asking the question likely won't make you an offer because they know they will either have to wait on you or will never get you.

If you say yes and you are a good player you are limiting your options to just one club if you keep your word. If you choose not to go to the club you said yes to, you'll likely never get an offer from them again.

If a club is your first choice, its perfectly fine to tell the coach in an email or in person. But its YOUR choice to do that. A club forcing a player to make that statement is no different than asking them "Will you accept an offer if I give it to you?", which is the way some coaches try to get you to commit without ever giving you an offer.

Love to know which club was doing it.

It's a numbers game. The demand is insanely high. I don't know why. Too many girls live in the area and too many parents willing to pay and drive their kids far to be on club.

OP here. It doesn't help that people keep calling clubs that create expansion teams "money grabs"
There is a demand, we should be encouraging more teams not telling clubs that they are being greedy money grubbers.

Disagree. It is the opposite. Want to make a lot of money? Start a volleyball club bc you’ll have zero issue filling the roster.

This is totally true. Clubs should run more rec leagues and clinics for the over 14 crowd so the high schoolers can play somewhat competitively in the off season. In Montgomery County there is a high demand and the county rec program needs more differentiation in levels to accommodate those high school players who couldn’t get on club but are more advanced than rec level 2.

This gives the team more of an incentive to select them and we clear up a lot of the clutter.
I mean how many times have you gotten an offer from a club you would be ecstatic about before tryouts started but then you get that offer and think well, maybe i can trade up and you don't release that spot until 9:30 when you hear from another team that had a player trade up.

Agree this past weekend was brutal.
But I don’t think this is the answer either. Kids develop at different rates. Maybe your kid just isn’t the best fit for that position any longer.
