Art and design are part of the fabric of the city, but there’s irreverence and humor as well. I suspect “gritty” here probably means “less prettified,” less sanitized for tourists’ protection. More “real,” if you will, with all the good and bad that comes with it. Not that there isn’t a “real” Edinburgh—there very much is!—but as a visitor, you have to actively seek it out.
