We looked at U Glasgow last summer. DC preferred it to Edi because it was less touristy, had a lovely long high street with so many great cafes and restaurants. Great music and thrift stores too. The college is pretty, totally integrated into the city, yet nice outdoor green spaces too. The architecture gave off Harry Potter vibes. We happened to be there for graduation and on a sunny day, so it was fun to see all the kids in caps and gowns taking pictures.

We stayed with friends who live in Glasgow, who had 2 boys who had attended the uni. They were both still living at home, drinking a lot and vaping. I certainly don’t think that is indicative of most grads, but it just turned DC off from applying, which is a shame, because everything else was positive.

My sister got her PhD at the U of Glasgow in the 90's. She attended on a Fulbright scholarship and loved her time at the school and in Glasgow, although it was much grittier back then. She rowed crew for the University and competed all over Europe and had a generally great experience. I love Scotland and the Scottish people --it is truly a unique place and a unique culture. We visited again last year and had a great time. 30 years later she is still in England--if that matters.

A city can be beautiful and gritty at the same time. Like Marseille. Or Pittsburgh. It is gritty because there is genuine deindustrialized poverty, low life expectancy, drug use etc. it is beautiful because there is some beautiful architecture, nature, and a vibrant and fun city spirit.

Pittsburgh is MUCH better than Marseille and Glasgow.

It is not “up there” with Edinburgh, not at all. There are some strong courses, but overall it is ranked significantly lower.

Glasgow is a complete shit hole. It was voted the European City of Culture some years back in an effort to restore it's image. But it was slums, trash and rats for all the 70's and 80's and not enough money has been invested in it's rehabilitation since.

Not the PP, but it’s more of a vibrant, modern city than a chocolate-box tourist attraction. Art and design are part of the fabric of the city, but there’s irreverence and humor as well.

I suspect “gritty” here probably means “less prettified,” less sanitized for tourists’ protection. More “real,” if you will, with all the good and bad that comes with it. Not that there isn’t a “real” Edinburgh—there very much is!—but as a visitor, you have to actively seek it out. Glasgow lets it all hang out.

I have a friend (an American) who went there to do a master's. She liked it there so much, she is still there 25 years later.

DS''s family lives in England and we lived there until DC was 8, when we permanently relocated to the States. DC is interested in the U of G LLB because she can spend 2 years in Scotland and a 3rd year essentially studying abroad. DC hopes to work in England post-grad.

Can anyone offer useful (and informed) comments about U of G?
