My son isn’t the biggest or most coordinated kid. He took a break from soccer to do swim team and flag football, great at swimming but not in football where he was always the smallest. After seeing his little brother play last year, he wanted to return to soccer. He also did a week-long soccer morning camp in June and did fine. Camp was coordinated by birth year. Still the youngest for his camp group, but he looked completely fine.

I understand the need for clear cutoffs, and our kid won’t always be the oldest with his late birthday. However, DH is concerned about our 9-year-old playing against 11-year-olds. Together we see it as an opportunity for him to play pickup soccer three times a week, no big deal. We have no longterm hopes except health and love of sport.

But we also don’t want him to hate the experience and quit soccer. DH is right that the timing is tough, with his re-entry timed at the worst possible place. If we had done it last year or next …

Do I have a case to bring this up to my contact in the league? Could they consider this on assessment day? If I asked for an exception it would apply to one season only—since he’ll turn 10 at the end of the year, and he couldn’t do u10 in spring.

I’m a rule follower and understand the need for clear rules on age groupings. If there were a U11, it would be easier to accept… but the u8, u10, u12 groupings combined with his re-entry, combined with this bday and size… it was practically keeping DH up last night.
