If this rec league does not have a U11 team I would assume that the team your son will be on is a combined U11/U12. Your son will be one of the youngest, but I would bet there will be a couple of other 2014 birth year kids on the team since they too do not have the U11 option.

I would be looking for a league that had enough teams for my kid to play with his birth year only.

In Fairfax county, the Rec program are by grade, so it's 4th, 5th and 6th grade teams.

Since your son was born in 2014, playing U12 (with kids born in 2013 and later) is a year up. It's not ideal, especially as kids start reaching puberty and have growth spurts.

Unless you change programs, he might not have a great performance year this year, but he would do better next year.

-Good luck!

My 9-year-old child is re-entering rec this season. He’s being assigned to the U12 team, even though he won’t turn 10 until after the fall season is over. At no point will he be on the field as a 10-year-old.

I inquired about this. Confirming whether U12 or U10 was the right placement. I was informed about the control dates and told that he is in U12.

My son isn’t the biggest or most coordinated kid. He took a break from soccer to do swim team and flag football, great at swimming but not in football where he was always the smallest. After seeing his little brother play last year, he wanted to return to soccer. He also did a week-long soccer morning camp in June and did fine. Camp was coordinated by birth year. Still the youngest for his camp group, but he looked completely fine.

I understand the need for clear cutoffs, and our kid won’t always be the oldest with his late birthday. However, DH is concerned about our 9-year-old playing against 11-year-olds. Together we see it as an opportunity for him to play pickup soccer three times a week, no big deal. We have no longterm hopes except health and love of sport.

But we also don’t want him to hate the experience and quit soccer. DH is right that the timing is tough, with his re-entry timed at the worst possible place. If we had done it last year or next …

Do I have a case to bring this up to my contact in the league? Could they consider this on assessment day? If I asked for an exception it would apply to one season only—since he’ll turn 10 at the end of the year, and he couldn’t do u10 in spring.

I’m a rule follower and understand the need for clear rules on age groupings. If there were a U11, it would be easier to accept… but the u8, u10, u12 groupings combined with his re-entry, combined with this bday and size… it was practically keeping DH up last night.

What should we do?

Odd since most rec programs are by school grade and not birth year. Check with different clubs that have rec leagues. It could be this club is small and doesn't have the numbers to create a lot of teams

Where are his classmates playing? Does that matter to him? If so, I would ask for an exception to play with them if they are U10. It is a rec program, so assuming all the play is intra-club, they can place kids wherever they want. I've done this with my kid that was small/lower end skill-wise who would have a horrible experience with older kids.

The whole "UXX" is so stupid when they group by birth year. Just call it 2016/2017 and be done with it. The UXX nomenclature only makes sense when the soccer year was 8/1-7/31 and comprised two birth years. Ultimately, if you are playing with kids in the same birth year, it doesn't matter what "UXX" is - you are playing with same age kids.

My bet is that they don't have a team for your kid. Find another club that will let him get some true 7 v 7 years. They will sell playing "up" as development. Development means different things to different people

It sounds like you are looking to play with a smaller club so to have enough teams they make the groups span 2 years. I was really surprised when I went to sign my small for her age, late birthday daughter up for soccer when she was going into Kinder and was assigned U7/U8. It worked out but if you have another option for a club that is larger and has enough kids for single year age groups that may be a better option.

You may want to try a different rec program that has more kids and doesn't have to do two year groupings.

I wouldn't think of it as U10 v. U12. Instead, he will be with kids that are his birth year and birth the year older. The "UXX" just isn't helpful and can be misleading.

You should let him play with his assigned age group. If got an August daughter and our rec program goes by grade. She had 13 year olds on her team this past spring and she was 11. She wasn’t the youngest. They can’t make exceptions or there will be no point to the rule.
