Here's how it works... At u13 when players are first starting GA or ECNL. US Youth National Team (US Soccer) recruiters watch for talent and ask top players to go to regional camps. If they like you you get asked to attend a national camp. After the national camp USYNT rosters are decided on. Both GA and ECNL (and DPL) have their own talent ID camps at these camps players that DOCs and Coaches select get looked at by US Soccer recruiters. If there's a player they like they get invited to the regional USYNT camp i pointed out above. Be aware the GA or ECNL Talent ID camp is kind of for USYNT recruiters and kind of a recruitment or retainment tool for coaches and DOCs. If there's a really good player that's moonlighting with another club the DOC can mention that they're being considered for the next Talent ID that's coming up in the future. This keeps them on the team. Talent ID invites can also be thrown in as an incentive when recruiting a new player. Be double aware that there's also DOCs with their hand out selling Talent ID invites. Sometimes it's not even that overt. If your club does camps for shooting or defense or maybe Futsal. The players that pay for all the extras are the ones that get a Talent ID. This is done to show other parents that paying for the extras has rewards. If you're on the outside looking in it can be very annoying + just another thing to love about youth soccer. If you're on the inside the likelihood of making the team is incredibly low. US Soccer is known for playing politics and picking players with a story or look over their talent. At least with the USWNT and USMNT players are able to show off their skills in NWSL or MLS (or whichever pro league) which makes players selected for the roster more defined by playing ability vs anything else.
