11 year old boy; has tried all sorts of sports, here is where we are now: Little League Baseball: $200 sign up fee, average about $150/year in equipment, doing it for fun to be with friends; only a year left Cross Country - Started this year, through school and then a club team, both extremely affordable, $52 for school team, $200 for indoor track, $0 for summer conditioning, 2 pairs of shoes about $200; running will probably end up as main sport Sailing - Horrifying and I will never add it up. Not even close to the highest level and doing it in a lower cost area and still insane (but grandparents help on this one).
Now I’m curious how horrifying sailing is, with an equestrian in the house…
PP - I always say "at least he doesn't ride horses," because we don't have to keep something alive. But he does have his own little boat which are about $5500 new, then that boat needs all sort of equipment, anywhere from a race sail that is used 2-3 times and costs $500 to a new mast which is $700 - $800 and it could get a giant hole in it at anytime which could be thousands to fix. Then special gear going from $100 life jackets to $500 drysuits, etc. Regatta fees range from about $150 - $400 depending on what it is. Coaching at regattas can be anywhere from $100 - $600/day again depending on where and what. Travel is literally all over the world - for example a number of kids he sails with are in St. Thomas right now for the week. A huge group goes to Italy every spring for about 10 days. You then can't bring your boat and have to charter one for up to $800/event. Season team fees for practice could be between $2000 - $6000 depending on which season (ie you are paying this multiple times a year) and where. I could go on and on and on. DS does everything on the low end of this, I am a pro with miles and points for travel, I use ebay for a lot of the gear and despite being told "you HAVE to go to Lake Garda," we in fact have not gone to Lake Garda and have survived. He uses race sails 4x the suggested amount, because I just can't justify brand new every time, etc. On the other hand you can also sail locally in a community program and have almost none of these costs - you use a club boat, you have a high school kids coaching you, hand me down gear, no travel, so it's certainly a choice! He is loving it, but we are also realistic with him that we won't do training to lead to a world championship berth (or another very high level event) because we can't pay $15,000 for him to go sail somewhere for a week - which is around the payment needed if you make the world's team.
