Op. I did ask for accomodations and since the school believes there is no disability based on their testing, we were not given a 504
NP - my guess is this issue is because MCPS is still using the discrepancy model for reading disabilities, i.e., significant discrepancy between reading level and what would be expected given IQ. So, a lower overall IQ would need substantially below grade reading scores for MCPS to provide services. That said, I'd address this issue now. Having done a lot of research into literacy programs and the evidence (or lack thereof) for them related to my ES kid's issues with reading, look for a psychologist or SLP or educator who specializes in reading. Beth Cianguilli at Stepping Stones Therapy is one I know of, there may be others. Good luck!
When you say substantially below grade level, does a few points below grade level count? DC mentioned seeing 216 on screen. I'm wondering whether to ask for an IEE
It's about the contrast between overall cognitive ability and reading ability (or math ability, or whatever "discrete" thing). A kid with average IQ who scores slightly below grade level isn't going to raise flags, vs. a kid with an IQ two SD above the mean who has the same reading scores. An IEE could be helpful, even if it takes forever to get. There are also different subfacets of reading, and so a more detailed eval could tell you exactly where the issues are (decoding, segmenting, fluency). A lot of kids seem to be fine readers at young ages, and struggle when they get older - very common.
