I'm the OP. I decided to go ahead and put the gift card inside the card. I'm glad I did, because at daycare pick-up today, parents were quietly reminded by a well-intentioned staff member about bringing cards and gifts for the daycare director's upcoming birthday. I would have felt horrible about participating in a celebration of the director's birthday and not acknowledging the birthday of the teacher who actually cares for my son while I am at work. The only thing that annoys me is finding out about DS's primary teacher's birthday purely by chance, but receiving a reminder about the director's birthday. If birthdays are a thing, the daycare should provide or post a list of staff birthdays.
Why would you get a gift for the director? That is ridiculous.
Could not agree more! It is crazy for staff members to even be participating in the act of telling parents to bring cards for the Director's birthday. Staff birthdays should be done quietly during time off hours and should not be part of the daycare daily life.
