I would have felt horrible about participating in a celebration of the director's birthday and not acknowledging the birthday of the teacher who actually cares for my son while I am at work.

The only thing that annoys me is finding out about DS's primary teacher's birthday purely by chance, but receiving a reminder about the director's birthday. If birthdays are a thing, the daycare should provide or post a list of staff birthdays.

Why would you get a gift for the director? That is ridiculous.

Totally ridiculous. Parents are expected to the gifts for the Director's birthday? what in the world?

I did $10 Starbucks cards for the teachers in my daughters daycare. They post all birthdays (kids and staff) on a big bulletin board. We are supposed to have room parents who coordinated that kind of thing, but If we had one, I never knew who they were. It didn't seem like the other parents did anything because the staff seemed surprised, but appreciative.

Could not agree more! It is crazy for staff members to even be participating in the act of telling parents to bring cards for the Director's birthday. Staff birthdays should be done quietly during time off hours and should not be part of the daycare daily life.

Do you have a way to get in touch with the other parents? For DCP birthdays the "room mother" has coordinated collecting a couple dollars for a gift from the class (gift card) and the kids have "made" cards for the teachers (my kid was about 8 months for the last one so I helped, lol).

I would be shocked if someone didn't give a card.

I err on the "giving too much" side, but only did cards. That said, I don't think it's a big deal either way..

Last week I happened to overhear two teachers at DS's daycare talking about several upcoming staff birthdays, including DS's teacher. We absolutely love her, and I got a birthday card and gift card for her over the weekend. I was planning to just tuck it into DS's diaper bag for her to find.

Now I'm wondering if including the gift card is inappropriate? It's only $25, FWIW.
