AMP 7+ is now a like for like replacement for AIM as it does not cover the first part of 7th grade math. AMP 6+ does All of 6th grade math plus half of 7th. AMP7+ does the second half of 7th plus all of 8th. Be sure to ask your MS and/or ES how they are ensuring the your son will be prepared for AMP7+ and where the missed content will be covered.
Should read “Is not”a like for like replacement.
A clarification: 6+/7+ isn't just an acceleration -- the compaction also shifts blocks of the curriculum around. Saying 7+ misses the first half of 7th isn't quite right, then, and, with the spiral nature of the curriculum, it may be among the reasons that they are not as concerned about the gap between Math 5/6 and AMP 7+. They might have created a guide for teachers as to the material that might be missed/might require quick review during the year for those coming from 5/6. I don't know if they made such public for families to see if there was anything they might need to support. The school's Math Specialist/Team Lead should be able to pass on the general concept areas, though. As more take this path, we'll see if there is any sunstantial impact from the missed material. With Algebra standards having changed, AIM from the older C2.0, though denser than 7+, no longer provided full preparation, either, though schools/teachers were filling those gaps by bolstering AIM or Algebra instruction to ensure concept coverage. Successful completion of either one of AIM or 7+ will lead to Algebra in the following year. (As another poster noted, there is also supposed to be ongoing evaluation to see if those in other classes might also be ready for Algebra, though that would be less expected). MCPS expects AIM to be completely phased out at some point, probably as teacher familiarity with the Illustrative Math curriculum makes keeping AIM unnecessary.
