This makes a lot of sense. When my son came up to middle school, they had him in AMP6+, but they didn't care whether he did the summer packet for AMP, AMP6+, or AIM. He missed out on compacted math because he enrolled into MCPS late in 4th grade and was denied access to compacted math 5/6. They now have him going to Algebra I guess because he has been getting 98%+

This makes very little sense to me. AMP6+ covers only parts of the 7th grade curriculum and none of the 8th grade curriculum. So now kids are going to skip directly to Algebra?? If that’s the case what’s the point of the compacted 5/6 kids taking AIM which is supposed to cover all of 7th and 8th?

Be sure to ask your MS and/or ES how they are ensuring the your son will be prepared for AMP7+ and where the missed content will be covered.

Should read “Is not”a like for like replacement.

A clarification: 6+/7+ isn't just an acceleration -- the compaction also shifts blocks of the curriculum around. Saying 7+ misses the first half of 7th isn't quite right, then, and, with the spiral nature of the curriculum, it may be among the reasons that they are not as concerned about the gap between Math 5/6 and AMP 7+.

They might have created a guide for teachers as to the material that might be missed/might require quick review during the year for those coming from 5/6. I don't know if they made such public for families to see if there was anything they might need to support. The school's Math Specialist/Team Lead should be able to pass on the general concept areas, though.

As more take this path, we'll see if there is any sunstantial impact from the missed material. With Algebra standards having changed, AIM from the older C2.0, though denser than 7+, no longer provided full preparation, either, though schools/teachers were filling those gaps by bolstering AIM or Algebra instruction to ensure concept coverage.

Successful completion of either one of AIM or 7+ will lead to Algebra in the following year. (As another poster noted, there is also supposed to be ongoing evaluation to see if those in other classes might also be ready for Algebra, though that would be less expected). MCPS expects AIM to be completely phased out at some point, probably as teacher familiarity with the Illustrative Math curriculum makes keeping AIM unnecessary.

Amp6+ can also lead to algebra in 7th. They seem to reevaluate often. My son is in amp6+ now and will be in algebra 1 next year.

I thought even the AIM class was supposed to be using only the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum going forward.

Even the compacted 5/6 class now blends ES Eureka and MS IM.

That starts with the second half of 7th grade, so I would have him review the first half of 7th grade in Kahn over the summer.

The good news is he will get a good curriculum (Ilkustrative Mathematics) and not 2.0. My kid is in AIM and I wish his school did 7+ instead for that reason.

My 6th grader is in AMP 7+ coming from regular Math 5. He's doing well and will be in Algebra next year.

His schedule was just posted on ParentVue and his math is AMP7+. I looked it up but can't figure it out. I emailed the counselor and she said the school doesn't offer AIM anymore, but that this is a better class. Can someone who understands this explain to me if AMP7+ is just a new name for AIM/replacing AIM, or if it is an intermediary level class and the school is no longer offering the highest level, which is AIM?

I know the math track starts early (now) and I just want to make sure this doesn't mean he can't advance appropriately. I'd rather know now if this precludes him from a certain math track.

Thanks!

You mean his course requests? His actual class schedule won't be available until August.

AMP7+ is a newer advanced class which is aligned with the current MS math curriculum, Illustrative Mathematics. AIM was aligned with the previous curriculum.

It may be helpful for folks to know what MS. Different schools offer different paths (and call these classes different things).
