I will never understand this bizarre groupthink among DCUM that considers Mazda to be some kind of engineering and performance standout. They’re a middling economy brand with a deservedly tiny fraction of the market. There’s absolutely nothing extraordinary about them. The company is still trying to ride the coattails of the RX7 and Miata but they haven’t done anything impressive since the early 90’s.
In fairness, Car & Driver, Motortrend, and R & T think highly of Mazda as well. In my experience, they are more fun to drive than any other mainstream brand—Toyota, Honda, the Koreans or any US manufacturer. However, Mazda is far worse than many of those brands when it comes to interior design, comfort, and fit/finish. If accurate, nicely weighted steering and cornering makes you happy, you’ll like Mazdas. If you’re more concerned with cargo space, cup holders and infotainment, Mazda’s not for you.
