We know he does not speak from any great conviction: when he was young, at the age most people are likely to be deeply idealistic and committed, he had absolutely no interest in political or social issues and was single-mindedly focused on making as much money as possible. He wasn't event that committed to MA as a governor. It was just a stepping stone to the Presidency, and he didn't linger on very long.
So he just goes with the flow of the GOP political machine, hoping that it's going to get him into the White House, and often puts his foot in his mouth.

I think if I were obscenely rich and thought it would be cool to spend a few years in the White House I'd be willing to put up with all this nonsense too. (I do think it would be cool to live in the White House, but not for the price you have to pay).[/quote]
