It is for security purposes, ostensibly, but even though that practice is dying some of the smaller hotels that still accept cash see it as a way to keep people from leaving without paying their bill. But the hotel holding on to guests passports during their stay was very much a thing throughout most of Europe until fairly recently. Less common now with everything digitized.[/quote]
