This is pretty common, especially in Italy. It is for security purposes, ostensibly, but even though that practice is dying some of the smaller hotels that still accept cash see it as a way to keep people from leaving without paying their bill.

No. I have photos of all our passports in my phone and I have never been asked for them. Im not afraid of them being stolen because I am careful it’s more not wanting to carry around a large bag, dealing with the potential of leaving them somewhere. We were in Italy 3 weeks and the only time we needed to show them was checking into the hotels and renting a car. Otherwise they stayed safely tucked away.

I keep mine on me, in a security pouch around my waist and under my clothes. Hotels and other locations are generally not especially secure, and i would not leave valuables behind where they may be pilfered.

I don’t carry it and is it weird that I also don’t worry about this too much? I mean I’m a boring person, Italy is safe and an ally, and the government has scans of my retinas. I just don’t think having to replace my passport would be much more than a bureaucratic hassle. Is it even worth stealing them any more? Or is it like phones and now it would be sort of bricked?

I carried in my purse and never felt unsafe but we also didn’t take any public transport if that makes any difference.

We don’’t carry either. I’ve never been in a situation where I needed my passport out for the day sightseeing .

Nope. No matter where we go. We leave them at the hotel/Airbnb.

P.s. and not only in Italy. I wouldn’t be able to relax for a second if I was carrying on me items that if lost or stolen would potentially put me in a very difficult situation to return back home.

Hell no. I carry copies and leave the passport at the hotel.
