Tons of teams are doing this. Playing up (11v11 at U12 or 9v9 at U10) gives the kids experience with what’s coming next, relieves some of the pressure of playing time with bigger rosters, and lets the coach preview some lower team players or guest players in the spring. Also part of the reason is that the tournament experience is pretty bad now. If parents are given the choice, they would rather play an extra league season (on Sunday if their regular games are on Saturday, or the reverse), instead of playing an extra tournament for basically the same cost. They get 8-9 games instead of 3-4, with no stress about travel or using up yet another weekend. One tournament can cost more than a league season. The only question is field availability, but top teams should have no problem asking their club for 4-5 extra home game fields in a season.[/quote]
