Depends on the school, and whether you consider extracurriculars to be part of "stats".

An athlete applying to a NESCAC or Ivy or another highly selective school, is going to have GPA, rigor and test scores in the same range as other kids who are accepted, but also the same range as many kids who are rejected.  The other kids who are accepted will have other things that make them stand out.  Well connected parents, stellar scores in math competitions, and amazing essay that got noticed etc . . .

But if you look at P5 schools, then the athletes do not need to meet the same academic criteria.
