If you don't want to go to the Big Box Stores, like Dicks, you can check out smaller retailers.  In Maryland/Virginia there's Rockville/Sterling Soccer and PJs Soccer.  Their store staff can probably give you tips or guidance on how to pick shoes but you probably have to watch out if they're just trying to sell you a pair of cleats.

Also soccer.com and worldsoccershop (sister sites) offer mystery shoes, which I think are basically online returns.  They're supposedly half off retail but you don't know what you're going to get.  I gave it a try where my only criteria/hope is that it wouldn't have pink accents and was hoping for a big name brand shoe.  Ended up getting a pair that was entirely pink, which while I see some other player's on my DS's team wear, I don't think my DS can pull it off.  The other issue I had is that the shoes were supposed to retail in the $100 to $150 range but I think it actually retails for $95 and goes on sale for about $70.  So don't think it was that great of a deal.  We might give it a try again in the future but maybe for the shoes in the $30 range which is supposed to retail in the $50 to $100 range.  But if you don't have any specific criteria like we did, maybe you can try it out.  It at the very least takes out the frustration on having to try to pick a pair on your own and just get something random that will hopefully be a good value for what you paid.[/quote]

pp from 9:25 again.  I was curious and looked up the model number of the mystery cleats we got and they actually do retail for $150.  They have several models that look the same, so I just assumed we got the cheaper one.  So those mystery shoes from soccer.com/worldsoccershop might be a good value if you don't have any specific criteria about colors or anything and just have to hope that the shoe sizing isn't that far off.[/quote]
