For Marylanders, Rockville Soccer is good. PJ's has locations in both Bethesda and Falls Church / Tysons area. Cleats are similarly priced to most online / big box stores. Better to try them on in person.

We are in MoCo. We used to always go to Dicks at Rio but they don’t have a great selection in store these days. I agree PJs Sports and Rockville Soccer are the best places to try them on though we have had mixed experiences with staff helpfulness and inventory at both. Once my son decided his favorite cleat was a Nike Tiempo, we found it easiest to just order directly from Nike online. They are more likely to have them in stock in his size and they have a very flexible return policy. Unfortunately now Nike has done away with real leather in the Tiempos so we are sadly back to square one.

We live in HoCo and shop for cleats at Soccer Corner (formerly Angelo's) in Towson. Our local Dick's seem to always have limited selection of models and sizes.

We usually try on at Dick’s for size but of course they rarely have the style/color/size my kids want in stock so I order online. Sometimes I’ll have the salesperson there just place the order for me and they waive shipping.

I like to order from Nike.com for my kids who prefer the way Nike fits because it’s super easy to handle any warranty issues through them and their shipping is fast.

For my youngest, who prefers Adidas, I’ve sometimes been able to order the next size up of her current boot on Amazon—occasionally I’ll find the previous year’s models discounted there.

I was waiting for it but checking online this morning didn't find anything in my kids size at a decent/discounted price.

I agree that it may be best to try on pairs in person as we've found some size variations can be off by an entire size between different brands.

If you don't want to go to the Big Box Stores, like Dicks, you can check out smaller retailers. In Maryland/Virginia there's Rockville/Sterling Soccer and PJs Soccer. Their store staff can probably give you tips or guidance on how to pick shoes but you probably have to watch out if they're just trying to sell you a pair of cleats.

Also soccer.com and worldsoccershop (sister sites) offer mystery shoes, which I think are basically online returns. They're supposedly half off retail but you don't know what you're going to get. I gave it a try where my only criteria/hope is that it wouldn't have pink accents and was hoping for a big name brand shoe. Ended up getting a pair that was entirely pink, which while I see some other player's on my DS's team wear, I don't think my DS can pull it off. The other issue I had is that the shoes were supposed to retail in the $100 to $150 range but I think it actually retails for $95 and goes on sale for about $70. So don't think it was that great of a deal. We might give it a try again in the future but maybe for the shoes in the $30 range which is supposed to retail in the $50 to $100 range. But if you don't have any specific criteria like we did, maybe you can try it out. It at the very least takes out the frustration on having to try to pick a pair on your own and just get something random that will hopefully be a good value for what you paid.

pp from 9:25 again. I was curious and looked up the model number of the mystery cleats we got and they actually do retail for $150. They have several models that look the same, so I just assumed we got the cheaper one. So those mystery shoes from soccer.com/worldsoccershop might be a good value if you don't have any specific criteria about colors or anything and just have to hope that the shoe sizing isn't that far off.

If your kid has odd sizing, I would avoid. We once got a pair with cracked leather. When I looked it up, they had been discontinued for almost a decade. Apparently, that was just what they had in stock in her size

Go somewhere like PJs/Rockville soccer or a dicks that has a lot of inventory. The fit and sizing is going vary widely between brands and each brand will have a speed boot (mercurial, crazy fast, ultra), control boot (phantom, predator, future) and a comfort boot (tiempo, copa, king). Some will have specific AG soleplayes if footpain from playing on turf is an issue (more studs, conical instead of angular).

Try everything on. Once you find a brand/style that fits her feet then you can look at soccer.com or dicks for sales. Dicks is great for sales online if you watch, as you can get top end stuff for less than 50% as their inventory gets low.

As for the big 3 brands, this is the hierarchy in order:

Adidas: plus(+), .1, .2, .3, .4
Nike: Elite, Pro, Academy, Club
Puma: Ultra, Pro, Match, Play

PJ's sports in Bethesda is good but may be too far if you're well into DC.

Any suggestions for a good place to get soccer cleats for my daughter (14 - plays club and varsity soccer in DC)? Also any recommendations for types/brands (a little overwhelming all the 1.3, 2.0, blah blah subtypes)? I figured I should step it up in quality given the amount of soccer she is playing this fall. Given how much the sizing seems to vary between brands, I think she should probabaly try stuff on rather than buying on line.
