I tried to use my oven yesterday but when I turned it on, it wouldn't get hot and I smelled gas. I assume there is a pilot light for the oven and it needs to be relit. Problem is I can't see where it is and I really don't want to call Sears and pay some outrageous fee for what is likley a very simple fix. My oven is a Kenmore slide-in gas range - anyone have suggestions of what I can safely do before giving in and calling a repairman?
1) Turn off the gas 2) locate the pilot light - it should be in the back of the oven, if you have a broiler compartment it will be there. 3) remove the cap and clean any crap off of it with a toothbrush 4) stick a pin down the hole to make sure it is clear, replace cap 5) Making sure that the oven is off turn on the gas 6) some models have a push button ignighter, if not, ignight using a long match fireplace lighter. It should burn with a small blue flame
