Also, we had a brief on potty training about 8 months after she stopped using diapers at night. She started having multiple daytime accidents a week (both at school and at home) and was wetting the bed almost every night. We finally figured out it was due to a possible ADHD issue (she knew she had to go, both during the day and at night, but would intentionally ignore the signals because she didn't want to stop doing what she was doing, even if it was just lying in bed, it's a classic ADHD behavior). But it was short-lived and I think it helped that we put her back in diapers at night while we figured it out. At that point she definitely associated diapers with babies and was highly motivated to not need them anymore. Since at that point the issue really was motivating her to go to the bathroom when she needed to, and not a problem of sleeping through it, using diapers was a good motivator because she was a "big kid" and didn't want to be in "baby diapers."

To be clear, we weren't shaming about it and didn't use it as a punishment -- we were matter of fact that diapers were necessary at night if she wasn't going to use the potty, because at 5 she was producing way to much urine for a pull up to handle it, and we couldn't be washing sheets every single night. But she still saw it as babyish and that really helped with addressing the issue so she wouldn't have to start 1st grade in diapers![/quote]
