We did diapers. Cheaper and more absorbent. Kid did not care either way. She potty trained during the day at 3 but wore diapers at night until 5 because that's how long it took for her to get to the point where her body would wake her up to pee.

Also, we had a brief on potty training about 8 months after she stopped using diapers at night. She started having multiple daytime accidents a week (both at school and at home) and was wetting the bed almost every night. We finally figured out it was due to a possible ADHD issue (she knew she had to go, both during the day and at night, but would intentionally ignore the signals because she didn't want to stop doing what she was doing, even if it was just lying in bed, it's a classic ADHD behavior). But it was short-lived and I think it helped that we put her back in diapers at night while we figured it out. At that point she definitely associated diapers with babies and was highly motivated to not need them anymore. Since at that point the issue really was motivating her to go to the bathroom when she needed to, and not a problem of sleeping through it, using diapers was a good motivator because she was a "big kid" and didn't want to be in "baby diapers."

To be clear, we weren't shaming about it and didn't use it as a punishment -- we were matter of fact that diapers were necessary at night if she wasn't going to use the potty, because at 5 she was producing way to much urine for a pull up to handle it, and we couldn't be washing sheets every single night. But she still saw it as babyish and that really helped with addressing the issue so she wouldn't have to start 1st grade in diapers!

I used pull ups because the fused sides meant that DDs could pull them up and down if they wanted to go to the bathroom before bed, if they woke up to pee in the middle of the night, or quickly in the morning when they woke up if they were dry.

I don't think it makes much difference at the beginning, but I did like that flexibility once they were closer to being night dry / nap dry.

They're 4. Usually I only have one box of each type on hand at a time due to limited space, but we actually have both at the moment, so I just let the kids pick what they want each night. We use easy ups, and Kirkland brand diapers typically.

Are they waking up with it pretty much full to the max or is it just an occasional small amount of pee? If he’s still wetting heavy at night I’d stay with a regular nighttime diaper.

Doesn’t matter. I switched to pull ups at some point solely because my store didn’t carry size 7 diapers and my kid found them easier to put on. But if I’d had a smaller kid, I’d have probably kept to diapers as they’re cheaper.

Just stay with a regular diaper. You’ll save yourself so much frustration and time. The size 7 can fit kids around 50lbs so you shouldn’t have to worry about them outgrowing for quite some time.

I know school age children who still need a diaper for nighttime. Just be patient, some kids take a while before they are ready.

Pull-ups are not as absorbent, and leak on the sides more. They have night time Pull-ups, but I've never used them. We stuck with regular diapers until DS started showing more initiative to get out of bed and go potty on his own in the middle of the night.

We stuck with a good nighttime diaper. Pull-ups don't hold as much pee, and I didn't want him waking up wet. Didn't seem to slow down the process at all.

We did switch to a pull-up for naps.

Apologies if this is a stupid question...but we're potty training our first (3yr old boy). Kind of winging it somewhat, as I wasn't expecting him to be ready, as just a month ago he seemed not ready at ALL. But has recently been showing an interest in wearing undies. So we're rolling with it!

At nighttime however, I think we're still a long way off. He's never once had a dry night up until point, and sleeps like a rock. Wakes up with a nearly full diaper every morning like clockwork.

What I'm unsure about, is for nighttime...Do we continue using diapers for now? While he's wearing undies/pull-ups in the daytime? Or should we be switching pull-ups entirely for both day & night?
