Thank you for this great information! I didn't know about factory delivery. Did you order it from the factory (i know you took delivery at dealership)? This way you can compare prices and not sure how much on the lot match my specs. I will try to drive both x30i and X3M. One dealer said you can get leather by ordering x30i with M trim (not the X3M) - I will have to check that after testing driving all.
No, with factory delivery you order through the dealer of your choice, which can be anywhere in the country, but you pick the car up at the factory. You cannot order directly from BMW, you have to go through one of their dealers. My first two BMWs were ordered from two different dealerships in Maryland (I live in NoVa) which offered the best pricing, and in both cases I opted to pick the cars up at the factory. I ordered the 3rd BMW, the X3M, from a Richmond dealer and got a ride down there to pick it up when it arrived at the dealership. In all three cases ordering rather than buying off the lot allowed me to get the exact color, trim level, and other options I wanted, and allowed me to avoid paying for options I didn't want. But, that approach requires the ability to wait for the car to be built - no instant gratification as may be possible by buying a car from the dealer's existing inventory.
