I assume you mean from the time you place your order until delivery, rather than how long you psend at the factory actually picking the car up?

Assuming the former, it varies based on the factory's production schedule and whether the dealer you choose has an allocation for the particular model you want. Dealers can only order a certain number of each model at any point in time, so sometimes you have to wait for them to obtain the necessary allocation. From there it depends on the factory's schedule. Dealers can give you a reasonable estimate for delivery time once they know what vehicle you want. Once your order is placed with the factory, you can track build progress on-line.

If you do factory delivery how long does it take?

Thank you for this great information! I didn't know about factory delivery. Did you order it from the factory (i know you took delivery at dealership)? This way you can compare prices and not sure how much on the lot match my specs. I will try to drive both x30i and X3M.
One dealer said you can get leather by ordering x30i with M trim (not the X3M) - I will have to check that after testing driving all.

No, with factory delivery you order through the dealer of your choice, which can be anywhere in the country, but you pick the car up at the factory. You cannot order directly from BMW, you have to go through one of their dealers. My first two BMWs were ordered from two different dealerships in Maryland (I live in NoVa) which offered the best pricing, and in both cases I opted to pick the cars up at the factory. I ordered the 3rd BMW, the X3M, from a Richmond dealer and got a ride down there to pick it up when it arrived at the dealership. In all three cases ordering rather than buying off the lot allowed me to get the exact color, trim level, and other options I wanted, and allowed me to avoid paying for options I didn't want. But, that approach requires the ability to wait for the car to be built - no instant gratification as may be possible by buying a car from the dealer's existing inventory.

Where did you pickup the car? Assuming you just ordered it through your benefit system. I know some employers have some incentives if buying a new BMW but it is still through a dealership.

I reached out to every dealer in MD and VA, and to a few in PA, to obtain pricing. Ended up buying from a dealer in Richmond. Pricing varies widely, depending on dealership-specific incentives which change often, so it's not possible to say that a given dealership will always have the best pricing - timing matters, and you have to do the legwork.

Thanks. Did you just email all the dealerships with what you wanted and compare quotes?

Yes, I emailed every dealer. Some dealership websites even contain a link for submitting requests for bids, because shopping this way is relatively common, a practice accelerated during the pandemic when people didn't want to physically visit dealerships. A few dealers didn't respond but most did. It's important to have a concrete idea of the model and options you want, and whether you're looking to order from the factory to get your exact specifications. If dealers offer you cars on their lots which have different options, comparing their prices will be harder than if you specify exactly what you want and ask for their price for ordering it from the factory.

As an aside, consider asking for factory delivery. The dealer never takes possession of the car, just does the paperwork processing, and you get a free hotel night, dinner, breakfast, a factory tour, and time on the test track with a vehicle similar to the one you're purchasing. I have done that twice previously, although I took delivery of the X3M at the dealership for scheduling reasons - lots of fun. https://bmwperformancecenter.com/delivery/

The X3M is at a different price point than the x30i, but you might enjoy test driving the M variant - it's very fast, and is effectively a high performance sports car with the utility of a small SUV.

We just ordered an X7 and plan on factory delivery.

I’m happy with mine but I got the M Sport with leather. I can’t recall if I could have gotten leather without the M Sport. I upgraded to all available features (2023) but it has fewer features than prior model years because of the semiconductor shortage.

I was looking for an X3 a year ago and it’s a little hard to find the real leather seats without the M.

Looking to buy a BMW X3 x30i - what features did you get?

Where did you buy and are you happy with it? Can you get leather on BMW X3 x30i without getting M sport.
