If you’re planning to send your kid to public school in the Raleigh area, be aware that Wake County has mandatory cross-county busing & frequent school rezoning.
Actually, I liked this about Raleigh. It' means that real estate value is not tied as much to schools, and you don't end up with so many neighborhood schools segregated by income. (See threads in the real estate forum where people are "terrified" of a boundary change because it could tank their house value.) I think Raleigh versus Pittsburgh would depend on whether your family lives in the south or the north, how close you want to be to them, how you perceive the University/ college situation for your kids. PA has lots of good private small LACs, and NC has the UNC university system. It's definitely going to be warmer in Raleigh, more prone to hurricanes, and possibly more expensive. Raleigh may also be more accepting of POC than Pittsburgh.
