Houses are sitting in Raleigh. Market is not great and neither are the schools

Have you ever lived in Pittsburgh? This is so far off. And its got 3 major universities and is a major medical hub. There is a lot, professionally and culturally, going on in Pittsburgh.

+2. Pittsburgh is a great little city with TONS to do. And extremely diverse (yes, the burbs, not as much and I'd stay as close to Shadyside/Squirrel Hill as you can). The weather is not ideal, for sure, so NC has the nod in that category. But only that one, imo.

I lived there for 4 years (not for college, either) and it was a fantastic place to live.

Actually, I liked this about Raleigh. It' means that real estate value is not tied as much to schools, and you don't end up with so many neighborhood schools segregated by income. (See threads in the real estate forum where people are "terrified" of a boundary change because it could tank their house value.)

I think Raleigh versus Pittsburgh would depend on whether your family lives in the south or the north, how close you want to be to them, how you perceive the University/ college situation for your kids.
PA has lots of good private small LACs, and NC has the UNC university system.

It's definitely going to be warmer in Raleigh, more prone to hurricanes, and possibly more expensive. Raleigh may also be more accepting of POC than Pittsburgh.

Too many Indians in Cary

The PA state universities (technically “state-affiliated”) that you’d want to send your kids to, Pitt, Penn State and Temple are obscenely expensive instate in comparison to their counterparts in NC. However, PA does have a very good 529 option.

NC has a Democratic governor and Republican senators.

I've been to both often and I liked both. NC has milder weather, which can be a plus. That said, Pittsburgh doesn't shut down like here when they get snow, as they're more used to it.

I would rather live in Durham because of weather, but I can see how they’d both be great choices. Raleigh does nothing for me.

Plan to relocate and put down roots in one of the cities listed in about 2 years. HHI 300k, 3 kids (two elementary and one toddler), both parents work full-time. Spouse one WFH exclusively. Spouse two will likely work in person/hybrid.

Which area is better?
