There's also the possibility of attributing the value of the items to the parent's estate - although I understand your parent has not passed. A friend of mine had this happen with some valuable jewelry her mother had. Her sister took it while the mother was ill in the hospital. Friend was the executor of the estate and after the mom passed requested the items back. The sister refused/denied she had the jewelry. But there was a record of it and it had been appraised. Sister showed up on IG wearing the jewelry. Friend as executor had the estate lawyer send a letter and inform sister that she had to return the jewelry or her portion of the final estate would be reduced by the appraised value of the jewelry.
