Ok. Maybe I'm being naive? I grew up in pwc schools, and we had pep rallies, football nights had overflowing parking lots, kids wore their school tshirts to practice and also "spirit week", even choral concerts were packed with standing ovations. Does this not happen in fairfax/arlington/alexandria? Really? It's all about the gifted program and that's it? Is there any wholesome fun at high school these days?
No. I don't think people put much stock in these vapid and superficial "wholesome" activities. We tend to stress individuality here, rather than conformity and groupthink.
Wow, I know Woodson, Lake Braddock, Robinson, West Springfield, and TJ all have these activities going on. If you can't enjoy some simple fun activities in high school, when can you?
Sure these schools have games it sounds like the OP is alluding to a different level of community involvement in HS Sports. Do they even sell tickets to games in this area? (they didn't when I was in HS). Games are likely attended by students at the school, maybe some alumni, and parents but it's not a big draw as a community event. As a PP pointed out, this isn't the Midwest and there could literally be a hundred other activities and events going on each weekend in the DC metro area.
