Not being able to see in person is a detriment.  But looking at a bunch of art and just getting a sense for artists or styles can be helpful.

Another more hit or miss online auction is in DC (well, Rockville) and you can look in person on their one preview day.  Try weschlers.com.  Every once in a while they have a speciality art auction.
