this does'nt answer your question but I'm going to suggest this anyway as a way to discover things/styles/artists you like:
Look at the online auction places, and jsut search art.
For example, liveauctioneers.com - search on art, or use their search function on jaspanese art. There are a couple of auction houses that sell a lot of japanese art - I discovered I really liked an artist named Watanabe Seitei, for example - his artworks just catch my eye.
Everything But the House also lets you search on the category art.
your budget puts you in a level where you'd do well in auctions.
Not being able to see in person is a detriment. But looking at a bunch of art and just getting a sense for artists or styles can be helpful.
Another more hit or miss online auction is in DC (well, Rockville) and you can look in person on their one preview day. Try weschlers.com. Every once in a while they have a speciality art auction. Also DC has a very international population, so there's usually some interesting art available at weschlers.
