Be consistent. Do a bedtime routine if you don’t already. Teeth, books, sing a song, get into bed. Say goodnight, leave the room. If he starts crying you can go back in but don’t pick him up or bring him out, tell him it’s bedtime and leave again. Repeat as necessary. If he’s capable of coming out of the room just keep walking back without engaging in conversation.
Thanks for responding, He can talk and walk and he will come out . He has a bed time routine and timing but mom or dad have to pretend to sleep with him to put him to sleep. There is no way he will just lay in bed. He goes to a preschool/daycare and at nap time he will follow the rules but at home he knows everyone else is awake and would not sleep without someone sleeping with him in the room. We make sure there is no disturbance even if parents are awake or we have guests around. I have been sleeping with him since he has asthma and has had very rough last year due to health issues. I know that it is going to be tough to train him but I want to do it sooner than later
