Hi all, thanks so much for the replies. Just talked to the doctor and she saw pictures of the rash. It is not hives ie no welts moving around and not itchy. She said it does not appear to be an allergic rash and keep giving the med for now. He has no other symptoms of discomfort. She said to stop if things change after next dose. She also said penicillin allergies are misdiagnosed too quickly and can be inconvenient and costly for the patient. Just sharing this in case of interest.
Thanks for updating and glad your son isn’t allergic. It can be a massive inconvenience to be misdiagnosed with a penicillin allergy. You can roughly classify antibiotics into two buckets - ones that kill bacteria and ones that prevent reproduction. For most infections, both kinds are fine, but there are a few severe infections that traditionally require antibiotics like penicillin that kill bacteria. In other cases, not being able to take penicillin means getting ones with more side effects, or a shot/IV antibiotics, rather than oral. Anyway, it’s a very good thing for your son not to be mislabeled with a penicillin allergy, so thanks for posting this so other parents can see.
