Thanks for updating and glad your son isn’t allergic. It can be a massive inconvenience to be misdiagnosed with a penicillin allergy. You can roughly classify antibiotics into two buckets - ones that kill bacteria and ones that prevent reproduction. For most infections, both kinds are fine, but there are a few severe infections that traditionally require antibiotics like penicillin that kill bacteria. In other cases, not being able to take penicillin means getting ones with more side effects, or a shot/IV antibiotics, rather than oral. Anyway, it’s a very good thing for your son not to be mislabeled with a penicillin allergy, so thanks for posting this so other parents can see.

My son is allergic to azythromicin we stopped after the red dot rash started on his legs he too was 18 months. I won’t give my kid something that causes a reaction. Switched to amoxicillin and was fine. Don’t mess with reactions.

Same thing happened with my son a few weeks ago and our doctor said the same thing. The rash cleared up after a couple of days and we finished the antibiotics with no other issues.

OP here, thanks for sharing. I hope the same will be the case for us. Did the original rash move to other body parts?

His skin is pretty sensitive and he gets rashes frequently. We did a food and environmental factors allergy panel 2 months ago and he only has a mild sensitivity to egg whites. However, noone checked for a penicillin allergy of course. I called the pediatrician’s weekend number and awaiting a call but should I stop giving the amoxicilin until i get ab answer from the doctor? I read that most people who think they have a penicilin allergy don’t actually have one once they are tested for it and the rash just happens sometimes. I guess i dont want to risk anything but also dont want to stop a med that is working for his ear pain.

Wwyd?

I would probably call the pharmacist in the meantime to feel better about my choice. My child got a rash at a similar age and the pediatrician wants it listed as an allergy for now. An allergist told me they can't really test for the allergy until 12. I didn't have to stop the meds because the rash came at the end of the course.

That's strange as they tested my child maybe around age 8 with skin tests and then gave them the amoxcillin/one dose and had us wait an hour.

Interesting, I was just told that recently and child is older than 8 but not yet 12. They did all the seasonal/pet/dust allergy testing and that was the response when I asked about penicillin.

Maybe it depends on the office.

I’m allergic to penicillin. I guess factually I don’t remember but my my mum ( England) always said I was. I take azithromycin if I need an antibiotic. Haven’t noticed it being more expensive or any issues. As an adult I had surgery and was given vancomycin and had a reaction to that in the hospital, so now I say I’m allergic to both when giving a history.

Yes, my child got a rash at that age for it. We stopped it and they gave something else. Sometimes its a one time thing and they can have it later but go to an allergist for testing. I think we gave Benadryl for it. We went to the ER.

Is it hives or maculopapular? If your child develops hives, which are raised, itchy, white or red bumps on the skin that appear after one or two doses of the medicine, they may be allergic to penicillin.

If you notice your child has hives after taking amoxicillin, you should call your doctor right away, as the allergic reaction could get worse. Don’t give your child another dose of the medication without talking to you doctor.

Do you have a patient portal where you can upload a photo?
