Hi all, my 18 month old was prescribed amoxicilin for an ear infection yesterday. He has had 3 doses so far and his symptoms are greatly improved but he has a rash on his leg. His skin is pretty sensitive and he gets rashes frequently. We did a food and environmental factors allergy panel 2 months ago and he only has a mild sensitivity to egg whites. However, noone checked for a penicillin allergy of course. I called the pediatrician’s weekend number and awaiting a call but should I stop giving the amoxicilin until i get ab answer from the doctor? I read that most people who think they have a penicilin allergy don’t actually have one once they are tested for it and the rash just happens sometimes. I guess i dont want to risk anything but also dont want to stop a med that is working for his ear pain. Wwyd?
I would probably call the pharmacist in the meantime to feel better about my choice. My child got a rash at a similar age and the pediatrician wants it listed as an allergy for now. An allergist told me they can't really test for the allergy until 12. I didn't have to stop the meds because the rash came at the end of the course.
That's strange as they tested my child maybe around age 8 with skin tests and then gave them the amoxcillin/one dose and had us wait an hour.
Interesting, I was just told that recently and child is older than 8 but not yet 12. They did all the seasonal/pet/dust allergy testing and that was the response when I asked about penicillin.
Maybe it depends on the office.
