Good for you for reaching out OP. Your situation is medically complex, and you are taking the right first steps. A couple of points: DCUM has a large contingent of fat-shamers who are grotesquely ignorant of the science of obesity. In general I don’t think DCUM is a good source of advice for managing and treating morbid obesity. People are too science-ignorant here. I would consider looking for various communities online that are moderated and designed for MO and SMO people. You hear horror stories about bariatric surgery for complex reasons but it is actually generally the most successful mechanism of permanent weight loss. That may change with the development of GLP-1 agonist drugs but bariatric surgery has a long history of good success. Also, they aren’t just restrictive surgeries. I would work to separate fact versus fiction with respect to surgery before you make a decision against it. Bariatric surgery with reputable surgeons with proper monitoring has generally good outcomes. The development of drugs like semiglutide for weight control is exciting. Please find a doctor that can talk competently about this. I would start with an endocrinologist who has experience with morbid obesity. Do not go to any doctor that gives a “diet and exercise” only advice; that’s medically ignorant and will just lead you to regain. You need a comprehensive blood panel, close monitoring, and good discussion of medical options. There are a lot of doctors who know literally nothing about obesity so you have to be careful. If one doctor seems ignorant, try another. Good luck OP. You’ve got this.
