I'm in Franconia near Beulah. I don't understand why your waterproofing company would recommend against a sump pump! While we don't have marine clay that so many have to deal with, we do have an impermeable layer of clay about 4 feet down. We have a sump and a sump pump that our french drains drain into that then gets pump out near the sidewalk. The only people I know that don't have a sump and pump are those that are on a slab (no basement) or whose house is on an up slope.
DP. Even people I know who live on slopes (away from house) have sump pumps. Worst case scenario, it doesn't get used. Best case scenario, it saves you from flooding. But if you had water in the basement, I do not understand why a company would "recommend against" one, unless they wanted to sell you other things that costed more. OP I'd put that company on blast here, because they sound inept--at best.
