In my experience, lots of cops don't want to live in the jurisdictions where they work. They don't want to be recognized in public. They don't want their families to bear any responsibilities from their job as a cop.

TBH, I think much of our issues in policing have to do with the fact that they are so disconnected from the communities they patrol. They see those jurisdictions as a paycheck, but not a place they are willing to call home. I feel strongly that we should incentivize police to live and raise their families in the jurisdictions where they work. Whether that's subsidized housing or a very real salary bump (I'm talking 30%+ higher), so be it.

That said, I think it is very much a cultural norm of American policing - particularly in large urban areas - to take your paycheck and run elsewhere with it. Given that their lives are already very regimented, I doubt many of them want to live in subsidized housing where they can't choose the location, amenities, schools, etc.[/quote]
