After fire department captains, police officers are routinely the highest paid county employees. Teachers are generally compensated competitively in the region but I agree that they could use a raise and pay for it by cutting all those six figure administrator and supervisor positions.

A 15-year police officer at the PO3 step: $94K
A 15-year MCPS teacher at the masters step: $94K

Top salary for a PO3 (without going into police admin): $100K
Top salary for a MCPS teacher with a masters: $108K

Some officers can become sergeants, and in that case they can make a maximum of $115K

The police are not routinely the highest paid county employees. Perhaps the police chief makes good money, but I suspect the head of MCPS does, as well.

In my experience, lots of cops don't want to live in the jurisdictions where they work. They don't want to be recognized in public. They don't want their families to bear any responsibilities from their job as a cop.

TBH, I think much of our issues in policing have to do with the fact that they are so disconnected from the communities they patrol. They see those jurisdictions as a paycheck, but not a place they are willing to call home. I feel strongly that we should incentivize police to live and raise their families in the jurisdictions where they work. Whether that's subsidized housing or a very real salary bump (I'm talking 30%+ higher), so be it.

That said, I think it is very much a cultural norm of American policing - particularly in large urban areas - to take your paycheck and run elsewhere with it. Given that their lives are already very regimented, I doubt many of them want to live in subsidized housing where they can't choose the location, amenities, schools, etc.

Surprised/not surprised FOP is not smart enough to endorse Blair, who actually has a chance of winning. But I suspect they at least realize that Blair will be an end to wasteful spending.

I don’t like Elrich but it’s hardly breaking news when any FOP anywhere endorses a Republican.

He’s like an abusive husband — he's treated them like $&@“ for 3.5 years
then waits til election year to give them a huge raise. Yes, they need it. But they also needed a boss who stood by them. Acknowledged and praised their good work. You can do that and still hold employees accountable when they screw up.

Is that a bad thing? Public employee union endorsements tend to mean a candidate supports those unions’ members over the public as a whole

My guess is they prefer Blair, but then what happens if they endorsed Blair and Elrich still wins? He'd unleash his wrath on them. At least that's what they might fear.

But let's say Blair does win the primary and goes on to face Sully. The FOP can't flip its endorsement, and Blair is almost certain to win the general. So the FOP gets burned that way too.
