On the other hand, if you feel like there is something wrong with the title or like it perhaps doesn't reflect the work they are describing to you as being part of the position, then it seems worth a try. If it's important to you to have a certain word in the title, maybe you can add it (probably easier than removing something). For example, maybe "Communications Director" because "Communications and Marketing Director" if you feel like having "marketing" would help your career trajectory.

Smaller orgs might be more open to it. I actually wish I had negotiated my title. I came on as a consultant and was asked if the title they were giving me was okay, and I wish I had suggested something else. I'm sure they would have been open to it, but now it seems weird to change.[/quote]
