Search the DCUM archives for thread count. Someone who used to work in the industry wrote a post on sheets. It was rather enlightening on thread count, cotton varieties, different weaves, etc. My recollection is that percale is the longest lasting weave (sateen starts out soft but doesn't last very long), and that the thread count is less important than the cotton type. Egyptian or pima/supima are the longest fibers and hence make the softest and strongest sheets.
