Agreed. A couple of summers ago, I took my kid to south central LA to play at a revitalized park with fields and a futsal court. He played with grown men and other kids, both of whom took smoking breaks between games (yes, both kinds of smoking). They played him in and obviously didn’t go full tilt physically or defensively. He was 9. It was the single best time he’s ever had playing and the most fun I have ever had watching him play. Ideal?  No. But much better than dribbling around cones.  My kid is never gonna be a star but this was the essence of fun and totally putting your ass on the line to meet different people and learn how to play. He will never forget it (for many reasons). I grew up playing basketball this way and also soccer on asphalt in council estates in the uk. There simply is no substitute for it. It is pure joy. Some clubs in the area have tried it but it needs to be organic. [/quote]
