our club has summer evening drop in games, u8-kids who just graduated. Kids form their own teams and just play. If you want the same, talk to your club

Clearly the point of pick up is NOT ORGANIZED soccer.

Show up at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Arlington basically every single night of the week and there are people playing there. Especially in the summer when no teams are practicing

Community use should be free and inclusive. Having 'One' of us pay or organize immediately makes it neither. Whoever owns RFK needs to just open it up for community night, maybe based on age groups? Middle School, High School. . .

My kid bikes to local park that has a turf oval and plays pick up after school before soccer practice and on days he doesn’t have practice. They will also get on the basketball court. Kids from school —that played Rex together way back when now all 13 and on different travel teams.

I used to drive them (older brother) to different fields I knew that had pick up at random.

Summer nights it was big

That’s just stupid. More of a question of effort than attribution.

Our DD found a pickup group here in DC during Quarantine and it was an incredible boost to all in terms of development and independence as soccer players. (Co-Ed Cohort-HS ages-Public Soccer Field centered). Completely player-organized so maybe that's the key?

Its like Basketball pick up against better players is where you get better. Not your neighbors or friends or classmates but got to th places the better players play at.

Agreed. A couple of summers ago, I took my kid to south central LA to play at a revitalized park with fields and a futsal court. He played with grown men and other kids, both of whom took smoking breaks between games (yes, both kinds of smoking). They played him in and obviously didn’t go full tilt physically or defensively. He was 9. It was the single best time he’s ever had playing and the most fun I have ever had watching him play. Ideal? No. But much better than dribbling around cones. My kid is never gonna be a star but this was the essence of fun and totally putting your ass on the line to meet different people and learn how to play. He will never forget it (for many reasons). I grew up playing basketball this way and also soccer on asphalt in council estates in the uk. There simply is no substitute for it. It is pure joy. Some clubs in the area have tried it but it needs to be organic.
