I cut out flour and sugar (for the most part) and quit eating between meals. The key for me was eating enough at mealtimes that I wasn’t hungry later. I learned to read where that satiety point was. I lost about 30 lbs over a few months. This was two years ago, and I have kept it off fairly easily. Example meals: Breakfast: oatmeal, 2eggs with cheese, apple, coffee Lunch: salad with walnuts, blue cheese, and leftover steak Dinner: chicken, roasted potatoes, broccoli
The bolded worked for me. I lost 18 pounds in 4 months by making only this change and focusing on walking a lot more. I wasn't rigid about the flour and sugar, just stayed away from bread and pasta as well as desserts. That is it. (Of course, I won't discount that I was generally more attuned to what I was eating and therefore certainly consumed less calories overall, but I wasn't tracking.)
