Maybe you are thinking of IVF where they fertilize the eggs then test for gender? The answer I heard (I think in a post here) is that the only way to test sperm is by weight. Male sperm are lighter and rise to the top when they separate them. Females are lighter and so stay at the bottom...which is also where dead or low quality sperm go. Statistically there are more boys born via IUI for this reason and your success rate would go down if you selected the female sperm because it’s mixed with lower quality.
