It's really not a big deal. My kid has been playing while wearing one since July. Some trial and error but now they're used to it and it's fine. And please stop trying to get out of this or around it. That's not good sportsmanship, any more than pretending you're wearing shin guards is sportsmanlike. Covid is not going anywhere and is as dangerous now as it was in March-April. Yes we have testing -- and that's why we're not in lockdown anymore. But we need to manage our risk. So we get soccer, and we also get masks. Better than lockdown!
I get this.....but have you seen 1 just 1 report of an outbreak from outdoor sports? People have gone mad.....I understand that indoor activities are risky but playing sports outside or doing anything outside frankly (outside of a tight concert environment) is not risky!!!
Risk isn't a yes/no either/or. There are degrees of risk. Ourdoor is less risky than indoor but not zero. Singing and shouting are more risky than standing quietly, but standing quietly is not zero. Running and huffing and puffing in close contact outdoors is probably very low *individual* risk, but when you multiply that by the thousands returning to youth sports right now, the risk is certainly not zero. I'm guessing there aren't many reports because everything was cancelled in the spring, now a lot of activities are coming back. Did a quick google to see if there were cases tied to youth sports and here's what came up: https://patch.com/pennsylvania/abington/coronavirus-spreading-amongst-youth-sports-teams-montco https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/education/youth-sports-a-driver-of-covid-19-infections-in-st-louis-area/article_45930e9b-01ab-5109-82a8-4f5d5cb18b3b.html https://www.aspenprojectplay.org/parent-mailbag/posts/2020/7/21/is-there-evidence-of-covid-19-outbreaks-due-to-youth-sports So yeah more than 1 case -- but not zillions. Impossible to know whether transmission happens on or off the field, but it just seems to me like a simple thing our players all can do to keep the fields open and the games safe for everyone. It's not that the risk to an individual player on any given day is high -- tha'ts not why we mask up. We do it as a community to break chains of transmission; and our athletes do it to protect everyone on and off the field.
Completely agree that there is no such this as zero risk. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to research this issue and honestly, I haven't seen much that convinced me that COVID is extensively transmitted by playing an outdoor sport. When you drill down on most of the reported youth sports outbreaks, the exposure is related to off the field activities of both players and parents. Things like staying on hotels together, hanging out and eating under tents without social distancing, sitting on the benches and in bleachers without social distancing, etc. One of the clusters in PA was spread by a soccer coach who attended a 4th of July party with other soccer families. I'm not saying that it is zero risk by any means, but we are doing the right thing to contain the risk by requiring masks (at least off the field) and social distancing, and prohibiting groups from congregating. My kids play soccer for two clubs in different counties. There have been county health officials checking compliance, noting non-compliance, and sending out reminders. At my kids' practices, every kid and adult walks onto and off of the field with a mask. They stay spaced out when doing drills and when not in the game. Coaches are masked at all times. Parents are either not permitted to attend, or must stay masked and socially distanced. Again, not perfect. If we want kids to be able to play sports, the most important thing is to avoid the high risk behaviors that are associated with any sort of larger, non-distanced gathering.
