So I am trying to get 1st hand knowledge/experience of Saratoga Elementary from people who actually had kids attend there. We are starting to have to be more realistic with ourselves that gunning for the West Springfield/Keene Mill schools are going to cause us to become house-poor and likely a larger Mortgage than we can afford. We have found houses we like in the Saratoga area the only thing we aren't crazy about is the school ratings. We had to tell one another that we cant really afford to be choosy at this juncture in our life lol. So asod from 1st hand experience W/ Saratoga can anyone share sine wisdom how you stopped focusing on school ratings and what not. What I am trying to tell myself is that so long as I am an active parent she will most likely thrive in any school environment, but then I see that 3 or 4/10 ranking and I'm just deflated. I just want to make sure my child has the best opportunities as everyone else. One thing that does interest me with Saratoga is its ranked very high for diversity which is important to us as well. Thank you and hopefully I haven't offended anyone by coming off as entitled,
Maybe for ES it’d be fine. I attended schools K-12 (in the last 13 years) that are 2/10 on great schools. For middle and high school no way. Just way too little rigor even in AP/Honors classes. Very low Ap scores (which meant I got low AP scores), admin laughed at you if you wanted to apply to top colleges or self study for Ap tests, etc. No culture of academic achievement, no academic clubs. The only sports that could field a team were not the “country club” ones. I’d look at the high school’s sat averages. My school’s was <1100. I’d stay away from anything under 1150 because I felt it affected what level of books the English teachers chose to have us read. Just my experience.
I think Key Middle School is underrated. The middle school years are difficult for everyone, but I think Key has done a good job of helping students transition from elementary school. As with any school, some teachers are very demanding and others less so, but if you have a motivated student, they will be well prepared for high school. At the high school level, don’t forget that FCPS offers academies and other options beyond the base school.
