Btw it was asked where I am from I am from Central Florida, I grew up here however for 5th through 9th grade down in Stafford. I have lived up here almost 2 years now and am renting in an area zoned for Rolling Valley but we currently rent a base, ent so it's not a long term solution.

Look on the DOE site, school digger, etc not great schools

Nothing against Catholicism, while wife is Catholic I am Baptist and we definitely do not make religion a central enough part of our life to justify sending here to one where I presume she would be bombarded.

Also it may be my misunderstanding but aren't Catholic schools $$$? That is part of the impetus of this thread is that we are realizing we can't afford something in the nicer school zones.

Unfortunately, this isn't true. Wouldn't it be nice if it were?

There are a couple decent Catholic schools nearby, if you’re willing to go that route.

We are starting to have to be more realistic with ourselves that gunning for the West Springfield/Keene Mill schools are going to cause us to become house-poor and likely a larger Mortgage than we can afford. We have found houses we like in the Saratoga area the only thing we aren't crazy about is the school ratings. We had to tell one another that we cant really afford to be choosy at this juncture in our life lol.

So asod from 1st hand experience W/ Saratoga can anyone share sine wisdom how you stopped focusing on school ratings and what not. What I am trying to tell myself is that so long as I am an active parent she will most likely thrive in any school environment, but then I see that 3 or 4/10 ranking and I'm just deflated. I just want to make sure my child has the best opportunities as everyone else.

One thing that does interest me with Saratoga is its ranked very high for diversity which is important to us as well.

Thank you and hopefully I haven't offended anyone by coming off as entitled,

Where are you from? If you are used to a middle class school experience, you will be shocked to find it takes a GS of 8+ and you will need to pay more.

Not true.

schooldigger.com takes the VA DOE scores that works pretty well to rank and compare schools

Maybe for ES it’d be fine. I attended schools K-12 (in the last 13 years) that are 2/10 on great schools. For middle and high school no way. Just way too little rigor even in AP/Honors classes. Very low Ap scores (which meant I got low AP scores), admin laughed at you if you wanted to apply to top colleges or self study for Ap tests, etc. No culture of academic achievement, no academic clubs. The only sports that could field a team were not the “country club” ones. I’d look at the high school’s sat averages. My school’s was <1100. I’d stay away from anything under 1150 because I felt it affected what level of books the English teachers chose to have us read. Just my experience.

I think Key Middle School is underrated. The middle school years are difficult for everyone, but I think Key has done a good job of helping students transition from elementary school. As with any school, some teachers are very demanding and others less so, but if you have a motivated student, they will be well prepared for high school.

At the high school level, don’t forget that FCPS offers academies and other options beyond the base school.

My children attended Saratoga and are now in MS and HS. Our experience with the school was a positive one, and I’m so glad that we didn’t listen to naysayers when we were looking to buy a house. Saratoga has some great teachers, and my children were well prepared for middle school. Yes, overall test scores may be lower due to it’s designation as a CSS site, but if you look at the data and compare the test scores for your child’s demographic, you will likely find that Saratoga performs as well as, or better than, schools in more expensive neighborhoods. My children are doing well in honors classes, and I’m glad that they attended Saratoga.

Saratoga has had a lot of issues with staff and admin turnover. They have a CSS program, which is for students with emotional disabilities and sometimes autism. It has not been well-run. I do know a social worker whose child was very happy there in kindergarten last year. Personally, I would shy away from it. The low test scores you are seeing is due somewhat to the CSS test scores. If you look on the VA Department of Education website and look at School Quality Profiles, you will get better information than Great Schools. You could contact the PTA and ask to speak to some parents who have kids there now.
