We have an 8 x10 and have washed it a handful of times. ( Thanks to our dog who loves to vomit on it) we washed it just fine- and in an apartment size front load W/D. We lay it out over our table to dry. It's fine. It serves a purpose. I can't imagine having a regular rug with our dog but yeah its not the best. Vacuuming has also been fine for us as long as we are careful at the edges. It looks worn just after a few months and I regret the color/pattern but I guess that's my fault.
FWIW, we have a very vomity dog and we got a "spot bot" style shampooer. It works well on carpet and rugs. (We also started giving the dog antacid twice a day.)
Yeah, imo vomit is nbd. Soak it in nature's miracle and then spot-bot it. The real problem has been my poor little guy with bladder cancer. Even that though, we could treat immediately with NM and once we figured out what was happening we could keep him off the rugs and just sent them out to be washed. Wool is pretty indestructible, it's just that sending it out for washing is expensive.
