Any ideas on going rates? I would like to do this but can't pay $20/hr or whatever people say nannies make, so maybe I can't afford it.
Minimum wage in DC is currently $14/hr, and July 1 will go up to $15 an hour--so you definitely have to pay at least that amount. But maybe think about what other types of jobs people can get paying minimum wage, and why those other jobs might be more attractive to a college student. For example, a job with multiple employees (ice cream shop, fast food, etc.) will probably have other people there age working--so a better chance to make friends and at least have a little fun while working. Some minimum wage jobs offer employee discounts, so even if pay isn't great, they might save money on the things they want/need. Many minimum wage jobs offer flexible hours/days--so if they like to sleep in and not start a shift before 11 am, there's more opportunity for that working at other minimum wage jobs. So if you're only paying minimum (or close to it) what would make your nanny position more attractive to some people?
